Prof. Mu-Ming Poo Visited VBN

On April 28th, 2015, as the Founding Director of the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), Head of the Laboratory of Neural Plasticity, the member of CAS (foreign member), US National Academy of Sciences and Academia Sinica and Director of the CAS Center for Excellence in Brain Science, Prof. Mu-Ming Poo and his delegation were invited to visit Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) and the Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics(BCCBP) by Prof. Qingming Luo, Vice President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and Executive Deputy Director of WNLO.

During the visit, Prof. Poo made the presentation entitled “Neural Plasticity: From Synapse to Cognition”, talking about the current strategies of brain research. He mentioned that the development of two-photon microscopy has provided powerful tool for the dynamic observation of neural synapse. And he stressed in his presentation that since our knowledge of brain is still superficial, it’s significant to employ multi-disciplinary methods to solve the brain mystery.

After the presentation, Prof. Poo and his delegation gave a field trip to the research labs of BCCBP. Prof. Luo and several PIs in BCCBP introduced the history, research areas and current achievements of BCCBP, especially the new methods and techniques developed through years, including the development of MOST technique and VBN. Prof. Poo and his delegation were presented and impressed by the 3D animation of some important research accomplishments of BCCBP, such as Continuously Tracing Brain-wide Long-distance Axonal Projections in Mice at a One-micron Voxel Resolution and 3D BrainCV (Simultaneous Visualization and Analysis of Cells and Capillaries in a Whole Mouse Brain with One-micron Voxel Resolution).
